Island Iz is situated in northern Dalmatia, between Dugi otok and Ugljan. Island Iz has two tourist villages; Veli Iz and Mali Iz.
Veli Iz is the larger of the island’s two villages, nestled in a sheltered natural inlet on the north-east coast against the fig and olive groves on Korinjak Mountain, tranquil and away from it all. The town
hall forms the focal point of local life and pleasant houses line the harbour front, each with its own vegetable plot of vines, artichokes, celery, lemons, lettuce and tomatoes. Peaceful walks lead through ancient olive groves, vineyards and fig, almond and apricot trees in an idyllic setting.
Veli Iz has a unique history in pottery. . Some seventy families specialized in this craft in the past and supplied a large part of the Adriatic coast with clay pots for cooking and household use. They could sell (exchange) their pots only in the territory assigned to them by casting lots. The story goes that the potters would throw the unsold pots into the sea before returning home, because it was a disgrace not to sell all the goods.
Things to See and Do:
A folk museum is housed in the old school building set back from an attractive harbour. Themuseum depicts everyday life, with an exhibition of traditional weaving and pottery upstairs.
In late July, the village organizes the Festival of Iz - "Iska Festa", a manifestation of folklore where the antic ceremony of choosing a villag eking can be seen along with traditional costumes and crafts, sports, and other events.
