Kvarner - Island Rab

Island Rab

rab-island

Rab is an island in Croatia and a town of the same name located just off the northern Croatian coast in the Adriatic Sea. The island is 22 km long, has an area of 93.6 km² and 9,480 inhabitants (2001). The highest peak is Kamenjak at 408 meters.

The northeastern side of the island is mostly barren, karst, while the southwestern side is covered by one of the last oak forests of the Mediterranean. Ferries connect the island of Rab with the mainland ports of Jablanac and Rijeka, as well as with the neighbouring islands of Krk and Pag.

The island is first heard of under the Illyrians in 360 BC. It was part of Liburnia and then part of the Roman Empire. The emperor Octavian Augustus built town walls and gave Rab the title of Municipium.

The Rabska Fjera, the Rab Crossbowmen's mediaeval tournament, the folklore heritage – these are some of the events that visitors must see while staying on our island. Come and watch these performances – they will take you back to some ancient time, to stories that paved the way for our present, stories which touch all of us and which contain truths that are historical and human and which are at the same time stories of the future. There are also many galleries and street exhibitions to see.

For those who prefer active holidays there are numerous possibilities of practising sport and recreational activities, ranging from diving, aquagan, water skiing, jet-skiing, surfing, rafting, renting a boat or a pedal boat, to parachuting, tennis, sand volleyball, football, basketball, handball, tennis, mini golf, boccia (a kind of bowling), cycling, trekking, etc.

Rab Town

rabOn entery into the old city of Rab you'll be met by the white stone of the sunlit Square of St Christopher. There is a fountain in the square embellished with two sculptures of Kalifront and the shepherdess Draga, figures from a legend of chastity and unhappy love.
The city is a typically medieval urban centre surrounded by walls that are in large part still standing. The old city is dominated by four bell towers mainly in the Romanesque style. RAB

Earlier, Rab was a Roman settlement, which was given the status of city by Octavius Augustus, who proclaimed it a municipium in the year 10 B.C.
If you love old cities in which every building brings to mind dozens of generations, you will feel really good in Rab. Above many of the Renaissance and Gothic portals you can still see the crests of the aristocratic families of Rab, the descendants of whom are your kindly hosts of today.

Right next to the city walls is the lovely Komrcar park, and below it a long path and bathing place. You can spend your holiday in the shade of ancient pines, to the smell of resin and the blue of the sea, without ever having to do without the conveniences the city has to offer.
