Rab is an island in Croatia and a town of the same name located just off the northern Croatian coast in the Adriatic Sea. The island is 22 km long, has an area of 93.6 km² and 9,480 inhabitants (2001). The highest peak is Kamenjak at 408 meters.
The northeastern side of the island is mostly barren, karst, while the southwestern side is covered by one of the last oak forests of the Mediterranean. Ferries connect the island of Rab with the mainland ports of Jablanac and Rijeka, as well as with the neighbouring islands of Krk and Pag.
The island is first heard of under the Illyrians in 360 BC. It was part of Liburnia and then part of the Roman Empire. The emperor Octavian Augustus built town walls and gave Rab the title of Municipium.
The Rabska Fjera, the Rab Crossbowmen's mediaeval tournament, the folklore heritage – these are some of the events that visitors must see while staying on our island. Come and watch these performances – they will take you back to some ancient time, to stories that paved the way for our present, stories which touch all of us and which contain truths that are historical and human and which are at the same time stories of the future. There are also many galleries and street exhibitions to see.
For those who prefer active holidays there are numerous possibilities of practising sport and recreational activities, ranging from diving, aquagan, water skiing, jet-skiing, surfing, rafting, renting a boat or a pedal boat, to parachuting, tennis, sand volleyball, football, basketball, handball, tennis, mini golf, boccia (a kind of bowling), cycling, trekking, etc.
On entery into the old city of Rab you'll be met by the white stone of the sunlit Square of St Christopher. There is a fountain in the square embellished with two sculptures of Kalifront and the shepherdess Draga, figures from a legend of chastity and unhappy love.
